Holokauszt-foto.hu

About this project

Holokausztfoto.hu aims to collect and introduce as many photos as possible about the history of the Hungarian Holocaust. After editing, we publish them with relevant data on the website. Since the beginning of this work, we have published close to 1,100 photos received from archives and private individuals. In addition to our agreement with the largest Hungarian collections, namely the Hungarian National Museum, the Holocaust Memorial Center, and the Hungarian Jewish Museum and Archives, our partnership agreement with the Hungarian National Archives will result in an influx of photos. The website could be beneficial for everybody who is looking for images for their work or studies.

Why is it important?

Why is it important?

We hardly know any photos about the persecution of the Jews in Hungary, a series of events that took place in the public eye. Nonetheless, photography was a widely accepted hobby of the middle class; many owned cameras and took pictures even during wartime. There are shockingly few, only a few dozens of photos through which we can introduce the events. Moreover, not even the existing ones are available publicly or widely known. In addition to that, they are also rather repetitive, which makes them lose their original impact. Our online archive, which leans on primary resources, provides a deeper understanding of the period.

Why is it special?

Why is it special?

The website collects and directs its visitors to – sometimes undeservedly forgotten – small collections and the owners, while it does not own the rights to the photos. As a result of our initiative and the publishing of the collections of the big archives, quite a number of previously unknown images have been uncovered. After having a massive social media presence and higher activity planned for 2022, we hope more individuals and institutions will contact us. Hopefully, everyone will benefit from this: more accurate data about the images and the historical events will enrich our heritage.
