LGBTQ-friendly Shabbat Shacharit Service

About this project

Since 2012, the inclusive Jewish communities have expressed their support and advocacy for LGBTQ people with a traditional Saturday morning Shabbat Shacharit service held as one of the events of the Budapest Pride Festival. Our LGBTQ-friendly service is usually organized on the day of the Pride Parade, regularly in the main hall of JCC Budapest - Bálint Ház. The event is open to the public: we welcome Jews, LGBTQ people, and their friends. Since the first time, we have had rabbis and cantors, who are active in the community, participating, and we also receive letters of support from other parts of the world.

Why is it important?

Why is it important?

In the progressive Jewish communities, women, men, and members of the LGBTQ community are all equal with equal rights and dignity in religious life. Our views can be found on our website, but we also find it important to express our support publicly and collectively, even more so in the current political-public climate.

Why is it special?

Why is it special?

The inclusiveness of the Jewish Progressive stream is so fundamental that it is not enough to declare it in principle but for us, it is also crucial to make it part of everyday life. Our LGBTQ-friendly service provides an opportunity for outsiders to experience the beauty of the inclusive Jewish religion. They will realize during the Pride Parade that not only will they not suffer any backlash due to their gender identity or sexual orientation in our community, but we will welcome everyone joining our service on this special occasion.
